Last week we had a shiny new stove and microwave installed. The ones that were already in the house were pretty old and busted, and it was well past time to replace them. They aren’t anything too fancy, but the stove does have a smooth glass top on it.
Now despite the fact that I don’t do a lot of cooking, I still found myself getting excited about the stove while we were waiting for it to be delivered. When it dawned on me that I was looking forward to kitchen appliances, I became a bit depressed. Excitement over stoves has got to be one of the signs that you are getting old and boring.
Naturally, the prospect of becoming old and boring isn’t something that is all that fun to contemplate. But before I got too worked up over my predicament, I remembered that back when I was in college, I would get excited about a new episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. So on the one hand, I don’t have to worry about becoming boring since I crossed that bridge long ago. On the other hand, the fact that I was watching Star Trek: TNG in college just reminds me how old I’m getting.
I can only hope that the Sloppy Joes I make on with the new stove can counteract the existential angst that the stove triggered.
