Like lots of kids, The Girl likes getting Happy Meals. This is due in no small part to the fact that they come with toys. I like this as well since it makes it easier to get her to eat sometimes. Plus the toys keep her entertained, and if they get lost it’s no big deal.

But little did I know that by allowing her to enjoy these cheap pieces of plastic, I’m steering her down a road which will lead inevitably to obesity. So thank goodness that there are right thinking politicians in the world who recognize this danger and aren’t afraid to make fools of themselves in their quest to protect our children from the evil clutches of Ronald and Grimace.

The selfless legislators in this case reside in Santa Clara County, California. They’re considering a proposal which will outlaw giving away a toy with a meal that has over 485 calories or high amounts of salt, sugar or fat. And as the folks over at Reason.com explain, the justification for this action is health care costs. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to people. Once government takes on responsibility for people’s health care, anything that affects people’s health becomes the business of government.
