I’ve always been a casual fan of Crowded House, dating back to their single, “Don’t Dream It’s Over”. But the band completely won me over with their 2007 album, Time On Earth. I simply couldn’t stop listening to it. I liked it so much, in fact, that I bought a copy on cd, which is something I rarely do these days.

So when I discovered that they had released a new album earlier this year, I enthusiastically downloaded it. I’ve been listening to it off and on for the past few weeks. So how well does Intriguer stack up against Time On Earth?

I’d have to say that on balance it is at least as good as the previous album. Intriguer didn’t hook me as quickly as Time On Earth, but I suspect that my high expectations are at least partially to blame for that. I wasn’t too sure about the first track “Saturday Sun” at first, but it has gradually grown on me, as has most of the album.

It’s a bit difficult to pick out my favorite tracks at this point, but “Archer’s Arrows”, “Amsterdam”, “Falling Dove”, “Isolation”, and “Twice If You’re Lucky” are all very well crafted songs. The only possible misfire here is the last track, “Elephants”, but even it is still pretty listenable. In that regard, Intriguer is actually better than Time On Earth, since the previous album had a couple of tracks I would skip over from time to time.

The bottom line here is that if you enjoyed Time On Earth you should also enjoy Intriguer.
