Simple But Intelligent Words

Merriam-Webster Online has another interesting top ten list. This list focuses on simple but intelligent words you can use to enrich your conversations. I think they make some very good choices, including “glib” and “lurid” for example. The only issue I have with it is the inclusion of “austere”. While it is a great word, the idea of using it rather than “simple” or “plain” strikes me as a bit too ironic.

  1. I don’t use austere as simple or plain; I use it to indicate my situation in life, as in “I am now on an auterity program.”
