When I was young I was a big fan of the TV show, Kolchak: The Nightstalker. It starred Darren McGavin who is probably most famous for playing The Old Man in A Christmas Story. Carl Kolchak was a reporter who routinely tracked down stories involving supernatural and paranormal creatures (vampires, sewer monsters, the usual stuff). One of the things about the show that creeped me out was the voiceover narration provided by McGavin. It tipped the viewer off as to how soon the hapless victim would meet his fate (or if not his fate, at least some kind of lizardman monster).
Since I had a slightly overactive imagination at times, it might not have been such a great idea for me to love a show like the Nightstalker. It provided my little brain with countless varieties of monsters with which to terrorize myself. Naturally, I provided my own private voiceovers anytime I imagined my eminent demise.
Little Brad climbs down the ladder that leads to the clubhouse at the edge of the woods and makes his way home to meet his brothers. It is a trip he has made many times, but tonight he won’t be able to complete his trip. No, tonight something will be waiting for him in the woods.
Needless to say, I hustled back to the house quite a bit in those days.
