It is helpful to pay attention to punctuation. Proper punctuation helps the writer more effectively communicate his point. But it is incumbent upon the reader to reciprocate this diligence, lest he misunderstand the writer’s point. For example, when I read the headline to this story, what I saw was:
Emergency Gorilla Protection Force Deployed in Congo
My natural reaction was to assume that the article discussed the coolest protection force ever assembled. Then I noticed that the headline actually read:
Emergency Gorilla-Protection Force Deployed in Congo
It is still an important story but not nearly as cool as the one I had imagined.
