One idea which I have never really liked is the notion of “guilty pleasures”. It does make some sense when applied to unhealthy foods or habits, but often it is applied to things like music or movies. Why should one feel guilty about enjoying a certain song or film?
Now I will grant that some things are rather superficial, such as Six Million Dollar Man reruns or most of the Monkees catalogue. But so what? If you enjoy it, what exactly is the problem? Not everything has to be Mozart or Dostoevsky or Roger Miller*. If you enjoy something, just enjoy it.
(* I don’t care what anyone says, “Kansas City Star” is high art.)
