I’m really going to miss this crazy sonofabitch.

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.

Ghost

I recently stumbled across an interesting blog platform project called Ghost. It’s the brainchild of a dude named John O’Nolan who decided that platforms such as WordPress have gotten a bit too complicated. He wanted something that would be a blogging platform rather than a full fledged content management system. I’m pretty sympathetic to his point of view and look forward to the project being released this summer. My interest in blogging has waned quite a bit lately, and I’m just generally getting bored with tinkering with the same things over and over here. Ghost might be just the thing to get things back on track.

Flickr Update
While much of the Yahoo buzz today was about their acquisition of Tumblr, they also introduced an update to their Flickr service. They now offer 1 Terabyte of storage for free. If nothing else, this makes the service seem like a pretty viable backup option.

American Life in Poetry: Column 425

BY TED KOOSER, U.S. POET LAUREATE

If we haven’t done it ourselves, we’ve known people who have, it seems: taken a vacation mostly to photograph a vacation, not really looking at what’s there, but seeing everything through the viewfinder with the idea of looking at it when they get home. Wendell Berry of Kentucky, one of our most distinguished poets, captures this perfectly.

The Vacation

Once there was a man who filmed his vacation.
He went flying down the river in his boat
with his video camera to his eye, making
a moving picture of the moving river
upon which his sleek boat moved swiftly
toward the end of his vacation. He showed
his vacation to his camera, which pictured it,
preserving it forever: the river, the trees,
the sky, the light, the bow of his rushing boat
behind which he stood with his camera
preserving his vacation even as he was having it
so that after he had had it he would still
have it. It would be there. With a flick
of a switch, there it would be. But he
would not be in it. He would never be in it.

I sometimes get the feeling that it is far too late to whip it at all, much less to whip it good.
